Facts About the Use of Earplugs While Sleeping

1. Even Doctors Recommend Earplugs for Sleeping

There is nothing wrong about sleeping with earplugs. In fact, doctors recommend them to their insomniac patients. The American Academy of Family Physicians, recommend the use of earplugs if the noise is the reason for sleeplessness. In fact, it is a better option than sleeping pills.

Sleep is important to maintain one’s physical and mental wellness. If you do not get enough of sleep, then the risk of getting fatal and serious diseases like high blood pressure, stroke, and heart problems are high.

It is true that there are tons of sleeping aids nowadays, but earplugs are cheap. You can purchase it at the drop of a hat over-the-counter almost everywhere.

2. The Earplugs Induces the Ear’s Production of Wax

Earplugs are not the problem per se. It is the ear wax. I am not saying that ear wax is bad for our ears.

Ear wax protects the ears from foreign matter. The small glands in the ear’s outer part produce the wax. At first, the wax is soft. However, it becomes harder and darker if not removed.

Typically, the earwax just goes out of the ears on its own, but the presence of the foreign matter slows down or even reverses this process. For this reason, the earwax tends to build up inside the ears.

When one puts earplugs in their ears, the ears will produce more wax, and the wax may tend to stay inside the ear.

The serious buildup of ear wax may affect the eardrum causing severe problems like tinnitus.

Meanwhile, wearing earplugs per se does not mean that it is bad for your ears. What is bad is the consistent wearing of earplugs and poor hygiene.

For this reason, make sure that you clean your ears every other week with baby oil or olive oil. The oil breaks down the excess ear wax.

3. Proper Insertion of Earplug Matters

The main goal of wearing earplugs is to get a good night sleep. This goal will become meaningless if you are uncomfortable with your earplugs. For this reason, the proper insertion, and fitting of the sleepingearplugs matter.

The silicone-made earplug is more moldable than the foam-made ones. If you are using the foam earplugs, then roll it into a cylinder. Insert it inside the ear canal, and keep holding it while positioning it in place. Loosen your hold and let it expand.

You should not feel any pressure or any discomfort while sleeping. If you feel them, then it is time to see the doctor for a recommendation.

4. The Earplugs Are Not Designed to Be Used Forever

You have to throw your old earplugs even if you think that they can still perform a good job of keeping you asleep at night. As what has been mentioned before, the earplugs cause the ear to produce more earwax. Moreover, there is a tendency for the earplugs to acquire some wax every time you use them.

This wax buildup becomes sticky which is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Same goes when you use your saliva as a lubricant. For this reason, you have to get rid of your earplugs after two to four weeks depending on your maintenance.

5. There Are Different Types of Earplugs

As what has been mentioned, it is important that you feel comfortable with the earplugs you wear or the goal of having a good night sleep will become meaningless. You may choose among the different types of earplugs and see which will fit well.

  • Wax earplugs
  • Foam
  • Silicone
  • Pre-molded

6. Cleaning Your Earplugs Is As Important As Cleaning Your Ears

Clean your earplugs once in a while. You can simply do it by putting mild soap or dish soap in a bowl of warm water. If your earplugs are made from foam, you may leave it for 5 to 10 minutes to soak in the soapy water and brush it with a soft-bristled brush.

However, if your earplugs are made from silicone, you have to dip your soft-bristled brush in the soapy water and brush the gunky parts of the earplugs. Rinse the soap with warm water.

Use a towel to dry the earplugs. If you want to, then you can spray some alcohol to your earplugs to disinfect it. After that, leave it in a clean, dry place to air dry.

There is nothing wrong about sleeping with earplugs at night as long as you do not always wear them and you observe proper hygiene. Aside from the hygiene, comfort and proper fitting and removal of earplugs are also some factors that can affect the wellness of your ears.

For this reason, you have to make sure that your ears are dry when putting the earplugs inside. The water or moist trapped inside the ear may lead to infection. Also, when removing your earplugs, do it slowly.

Do not push the earplugs too far. Make sure to push them as far as you are comfortable, and remember that you do not want to rupture your eardrums.

If you remove your earplugs immediately while they are snugly fit your ear canal, then it may cause some damage to the eardrum.
